Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School and Chief of the Stroke Service at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Dr. Caplan is both a diplomat and fellow of the American Board of Internal Medicine and a fellow of the American College of Physicians and of the American Board of Neurology and Psychiatry. He is the author or editor of 26 books, mostly on various aspects of stroke and over 500 articles in medical journals. He has been the Chairman of the Stroke Council of the American Heart Association as well as chair of a number of neurological and stroke organizations, including the Boston and Chicago Neurological Societies.

A national expert in sleep disorders in the elderly, Dr. Avidan is Associate Director of the Sleep Disorders Center at UCLA, where he is continuing research work in geriatrics sleep medicine and examining the neurocognitive consequences of sleep deprivation among physicians in training. He was Principal Investigator of a National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, NIH, Sleep Academic Award, and has developed a number of educational modules for teaching sleep topics, as well as highly successful courses focusing on sleep disorders. He has also guest edited journal issues on sleep medicine and sleep disorders in neurologic and neuromuscular disorders and dementia.

Egilius LH. Spierings MD, PhD

A graduate of the Erasmus University in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, Dr. Spierings received his M.D. degree in 1978 and his Ph.D. degree in experimental pharmacology in 1980. He trained in neurology and neurosurgery at the University Hospital in Rotterdam, in psychiatry at the Reinier de Graaf Hospital in Delft, and in headache management at the Headache Research Foundation in Boston. In 1986, he was certified in neurology by the Royal Netherlands Medical Association. He is a fellow of the American Headache Society and a diplomate of the American Academy of Pain Management. He is a certified physician investigator through the Academy of Pharmaceutical Physicians and Investigators. He is the director of MedVadis Research Corporation, an independent, multi-specialty, clinical-trial research center and an associate professor of neurology (part-time academic faculty) at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He has lectured extensively, including almost 100 hospital grand rounds, published more than 200 research and educational papers as well as 10 books, and organized 20 symposia.
